Home Alarm System Review

The best wire runs for detection devices

I spoke with a guy who has been in the alarm and security business for about 35yrs now, and and he finds it so very hard to understand why someone would want to take on installing their own security system if they are unskilled for the task. Its not an insult your abilities, just an appeal to your practical side since there are a whole whack of companies out there offering to do it for free as long as you sign up for monitoring.

For a single story bungalow a very basic security system can be bought outright for somewhere between $250.00 to $500.00 fully installed, if you don't want monitoring. If you get it from a reputable alarm dealer he will supply you with a system that is designed to be installed by professionals who know what they are doing.

From what he says, he has seen most of the systems that are offered in retail for do-it-yourselfers, and at best can only be described as toys for tinkerers. They cost twice as much as the ones offered by installing dealers, and you haven't even started to factor in the cost of the wire, and specialized tools that you will have to buy so you can properly hide the wire in your home.
He mentions that he has on more than one occasion been called in to service systems that were installed by either an amateur or do-it-yourselfer, and he either fixed the problem, and cringed at what he saw, or told the customer that they would be better off if they allowed him to start from scratch and build them a descent system.

Simply because he could spend less time doing that then trying to unravel someone elses mess. Furthermore, you should check your local bylaws regarding security systems, and police responce. In the city where I live it costs an alarm system owner close to $90.00 per false dispatch of the police to a premises due to a call generated by an alarm system. After more than 3 false calls to the same premises, they just stop responding altogether for one year. Do you really want the police to stop responding, what if you have a real emergency. Can you be sure that you will be able to install a system that will be trouble free, and not be causing the police unnecessary dispatches to your home?

Even if you can arguably save a buck or two on your security system installation, is it really worth the risk of unneccessarily draining police resources, when your installation starts to act up?
